Only a week back from vacation and it feels like a lifetime ago already…I’ve been wading through photos I took on our California road trip, and so as to not overwhelm (though I’m sure pictures from other people’s vacations are terribly interesting to everyone), I’m starting today with the Bay Area leg.
My best friend lives in Rockridge, a charming, hip little pocket of Oakland, full of boutiques, restaurants and gourmet markets. It’s become one of my favorite Bay Area neighborhoods and we always have a wonderful time visiting.
This leg of the trip was only two days long, so we didn’t have time to see too many sights, but the beauty of the Bay Area is that you can walk two steps and stumble upon something new and magical. Small businesses thrive there, and shopping local is just so easy to do.
This year has been full of upheaval in terms of friendships. New friends have entered my life, while some I thought I was close to have let me down or fallen away. I’m grateful for Jen, who has been by my side since we were 12. We’ve been through so much together, so to see our children growing up as friends in their own right is really beautiful.
Places to try:
Bay Area Discovery Museum- great outdoorsy museum with imaginative exhibits for young kids
Cibo in Sausalito- delicious Panini and quinoa salad
Brotzeit Lokal- sausage and beer on the Oakland waterfront. The area’s a little sketchy but it’s worth a visit for the view and the food.
A16 Rockridge- yum, yum, yum. Almost everything we ordered was amazing.
Fenton’s Creamery- old-fashioned ice cream; great for kids.
Conga Lounge- weird, kitschy tiki lounge with strong, awesome Mai Tais. So good, we hatched a plan over drinks to spend my next birthday in Hawaii!
And of course, Book/Shop
