There comes a point in vacation packing where you start throwing in clothes that you know are unlikely to actually be worn, but because they fit your fantasy of the trip’s events, they must come along. For me, that often includes my workout clothes. This time around, I’m guessing it will be these snowy white jean cutoffs. Yes, they are very early 90’s, but since neon and floral jeans are back in style, I think that’s acceptable. But are they practical for a week spent boating and hiking around a lake in Minnesota with my relatives? No, not practical, but they’ll sure look cute in photos!
I’m nervous and excited about spending a week in a small cabin with my parents and kids. I’ve had a few flashbacks already to family vacations we took during my high school years. My parents are fond of the saying, “We’ll just play it by ear,” which is kryptonite to my scheduled, compulsive tendencies. I’m going to do my best to relax and go with the flow, and if all else fails, I’ll just have to escape with my wine for a breather. The kids are giddy at the idea of spending time around the campfire with their second cousins, and that’s really why we’re doing this. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of lazy weeks at my grandparents’ house spent swimming and playing with the cousins we’ll be with, and it’s so special to me that our kids will now be close.
So…housesitter is on her way, work is wrapped up, books have been chosen (it was a TOUGH process as I had six new books I’m just dying to take and had to narrow it down to three for luggage weight purposes), and the kids’ backpacks are packed with new books, toys, snacks, games, iPad apps and anything else that will get us smoothly through multiple flight legs and a time change. I think we’re ready for our adventure!
If you’d like to follow along while we experience all that Minnesota has to offer (mosquitoes, cute moccasins and water skiing), you can find me on Instagram @suchsmallsteps. I have promised my parents that I will post more than just shots of the bar
I will also have a few fun, short posts up next week to help you celebrate summer in style. I’d love it if you check back.
Hope you all have a wonderful holiday week! xoxo
P.S. If you love hip hop and rap, old or new, watch this and be prepared to have your mind blown! I watched this last night and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for hours. (And if you love it like I do, do a YouTube search for parts one and two!)

Woohoo!! Let the packing commence (on my end). And luckily you’ll have a combination of planned activities, thanks to Aunt K, and go-with-the-flow. Plus, you have tons of built-in babysitters for when you need a breather.
See you guys soon!!
