Get to Know: Brandi from Not Your Average Ordinary

It’s a pleasure to profile Brandi from Not Your Average Ordinary today. Brandi is not your everyday blogger: she is a writer, a dreamer, a chef and a scientist. Her blog is lush and fascinating, and it features Brandi’s wishes, her daydreams, travel, her discoveries and so much more. I met Brandi at Alt Summit and again more recently in San Diego, and she has the most gentle energy that attracts kindness and adventure. I’ve loved getting to know her better and I think you will, too.

Favorite photo taken this month… (pictured above) plus a bit of the story behind it

Erin may have asked for one photo, but I gave her two. These were shot on the same day, one shortly after the other. It was a Friday afternoon and I decided to wander over to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, not far from where I live. Even being so close to the Library of Congress, to the museums, and to the National Mall, it’s easy to forget that sometimes it’s important we play tourist in our own home cities (or towns). There are so many wonderful things out there to discover.

What is the last book you read?

Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore. I absolutely love young adult novels and Kristin Cashore’s Graceling trilogy is fantastic.

Beauty tip?

Smile. But besides that, always wear sunblock.

Daily uniform?

Any of the dresses from Eucalyptus. I bought two on Modcloth recently and they’re my favorite things to wear – even if I can’t wear them to work.

How would you spend a perfect day alone?

A sunrise. A cup of tea. A walk. Pastured eggs, scrambled with fresh herbs. A book that makes hours pass as if they were minutes. Discovery of the world. An exhibit at a museum that stirs my soul. A long drive with good music into the country. Watching the stars blink back into existence and take over the sky.

Dream vacation spot

Scotland. I’ll be heading there later this summer and I wish I could spend a year there, not just a week.

Crowd-pleaser dish?

My homemade chocolate hazelnut spread. Besides that I love making cavatelli from scratch for guests.

Right now I’m listening to…

Beirut. Their sound is just so right for the summer.

What is one blog you love that my readers may not know?

Jeremy and Kathleen. Really, it’s just Kathleen writing, but she’s awesome and always an inspiration (and a good friend).

If you could tell your 18 year old self one thing, what would it be?

Don’t consider settling for anything less than true love.

Wonderful interview, Erin and Brandi! Brandi’s writing is really beautiful and evocative. I love visiting Brandi’s blog to see what adventures she’s been on from her unique perspective and read her reflections on life. (Erin, your intro really describes it the best.) Smiling is a great beauty tip! Oh, Scotland later this summer…That trip is going to make for some beautifully written stories.

I adore Brandi! She is one of my all-time favorites, and I cannot wait for her to come back to the West Coast and be a guest in my home again (but she must stay longer than one night!).

I adore Brandi. I think I knew most of this stuff, but there were one or two little tidbits I learned! Lucky to call Brandi my friend… I can’t wait to hear about her trip to Scotland this summer (we were skyping about it just a few days ago!)
